Almost every “fastest” or “longest-range” private jet claim online is measured differently by whoever is making it. The differences are not small — they routinely change the ranking.

That is the useful fact about private jet facts. A range figure without its payload, speed, and reserve assumptions is not a specification. It is marketing.

This guide gives the verified numbers straight from the manufacturers, states the measurement basis for each, and shows what happens when you apply the same figure to a real flight.

The measurement problem, in one comparison

Manufacturers publish accurate numbers under stated conditions, and the conditions do most of the work. Here is the clearest example in the current market.

Gulfstream publishes the G800’s maximum range as 8,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.85, with 8 passengers, 4 crew and NBAA IFR reserves. The same aircraft, in the same document, is rated at 7,000 nautical miles at Mach 0.90.

That is the same airframe, losing 1,200 nautical miles — 14.6% of its range — for a 5.9% increase in cruise speed. The “longest-range business jet” and a much shorter-legged aircraft are the same machine, measured at two points on one curve.

So when a ranking puts one jet above another on range, the first question is always: at what speed, with how many people aboard, and under whose reserve rules? Verified figures and what each one is measured at

Every number below comes from the manufacturer’s own current specification, with the basis stated. Where a basis is missing, the number is not comparable to anything.

Two traps live in that table. Mmo is not cruise speed — it is the certificated maximum, a limit rather than a schedule, and no one flies a 13-hour leg at it. And cabin length figures exclude the baggage compartment on both manufacturers, so a cabin quoted at 56 feet is not 56 feet of usable seating.

What the record range actually buys you

Here is the arithmetic that turns a brochure figure into a flight, worked on a real city pair.

New York to Hong Kong is roughly 7,000 nautical miles great-circle. Against the G800’s 8,200 nm figure, that leaves about 1,200 nm of margin, which looks comfortable.

Now fly it at Mach 0.90 instead. The published range at that speed is 7,000 nm — exactly the distance, with zero margin. Before a single real-world factor is applied, the trip is already marginal.

So the summary is straightforward: flying faster costs 1,200 nm of range to save under an hour, and a routine headwind can turn the fast profile into a fuel stop. The trade is almost never worth it on a long leg, which is why crews plan long-range cruise and the record numbers exist mostly to be quoted.

The payload trap is the same shape. All the range figures above assume eight passengers. Fill a G700’s cabin toward its 19 seats, add bags, and the range falls well below the published number. A ranking built on eight-passenger figures tells you nothing about a full aircraft.

“Most expensive” means four different things

The most-expensive rankings are the least consistent of all, because four separate numbers get used interchangeably.

List price is the manufacturer’s base figure before options. Almost no aircraft is delivered at it.

Typical equipped price includes the interior, connectivity, and options the buyer actually specified. It is the number that matters and the one least often published.

VIP airliner conversions are a different product entirely. A Boeing or Airbus narrowbody fitted with a private interior costs a multiple of any business jet, and dropping it into a business-jet ranking makes the list meaningless.

Which rankings matter, and which are just trivia

Not every superlative is useless. Some map directly to a booking decision and some do not.

Rankings that change what you should charter:

  • Range at a stated payload, because it determines whether your leg is non-stop. This is the one that matters most.
  • Cabin height and length, because they decide whether a six-hour flight is comfortable or endured.
  • Runway and field performance, which decides whether an aircraft can use your airport at all.

Rankings that are trivia:

Comparing range figures at different payloads. A 7,500 nm figure at four passengers and a 7,000 nm figure at eight are not a ranking. They are two different tests.

Counting VIP airliners as business jets. A converted narrowbody wins every superlative and belongs in its own category.

Quoting list price as purchase price. Options and interiors routinely move the delivered figure a long way from the published one.

Citing a stale spec. Manufacturers revise published performance as aircraft are certificated and refined. The FAA type certificate data and the manufacturer’s current page are the only reliable sources, and NBAA publishes the reserve conventions those figures are calculated against.
