The seven private jet types, what each one can actually fly, and how

Private jet types are sorted into seven categories by size and range: turboprop, very light, light, midsize, super-midsize, heavy, and ultra-long-range. Category — not brand — decides whether an aircraft can fly your trip.

Most people shop this backwards. They pick a name they recognize, then find out at quote time that it cannot make the leg nonstop, cannot land at the airport they wanted, or cannot carry eight people and their ski bags at the same time.

This page fixes that order. Work the trip first, get a category, then compare specific aircraft inside it. The eight aircraft guides below cover the models charter fleets actually operate.

The seven categories, and who each one is for

Each category exists because it solves a different constraint, not because it costs more than the one below it.

Turboprops carry 7–9 people on legs under about 2 hours and get into short, high, or unpaved runways that jets cannot use. The King Air 350 is the workhorse here; its current production sibling, the King Air 360, publishes a 3,300 ft takeoff field length and 1,806 nm of range on Beechcraft’s own spec sheet.

Very light jets seat 4–5 and fly roughly 1,000–1,400 nm. Faster than a turboprop, cheaper than a light jet, and genuinely tight on baggage.

Light jets are the volume category in North American charter. The Embraer Phenom 300 is the benchmark — Embraer publishes 2,055 nm for the current 300EV, which covers nearly all regional US legs nonstop.

Midsize jets add a stand-up-ish cabin, an enclosed lavatory, and real baggage volume. The Hawker 800XP still flies a large share of this segment in charter fleets despite being out of production.

Super-midsize is where transcontinental nonstop becomes routine. Bombardier publishes 3,400 nm for the Challenger 350’s successor, the Challenger 3500, with a 6 ft cabin height. The Cessna Citation X trades some cabin for speed.

Heavy jets seat 12–16 with a full galley, a real lavatory, and enough fuel for most Atlantic crossings. The Gulfstream G550 defined this tier.

Ultra-long-range is a different problem entirely: 12+ hour legs, two crews, and a cabin designed for sleeping. Gulfstream publishes 7,500 nm for the G650ER at Mach 0.85 and 7,750 nm for the G700.

How to pick a category: work the leg, not the brochure

Pick a category by testing your worst leg against five numbers: great-circle distance, headwind, passenger count, runway length, and cabin height. Run them in that order.

Take Teterboro to Aspen — a real winter trip, and a useful one because it breaks the obvious answer. Great-circle distance is about 1,500 nm. A Phenom 300EV publishes 2,055 nm, so the brochure says yes.

Now add the wind. Westbound in winter you are fighting the jet stream. At a long-range cruise of roughly 430 kt true against a 60 kt average headwind, groundspeed is 370 kt. That leg takes 4.05 hours instead of 3.49.

Fuel burn tracks time, not distance. So a 1,500 nm westbound leg costs the same fuel as a 1,742 nm still-air leg (4.05 hours × 430 kt). Against a 2,055 nm book number, your margin has quietly dropped from 555 nm to about 313 nm — before reserves and before a single extra passenger.

Then add people. Embraer’s own range footnote assumes five occupants at 200 lb each. Add three more adults with winter luggage and you are roughly 600–700 lb heavier on an airframe already near max takeoff weight. On a light jet that weight comes out of fuel, because there is nowhere else for it to come from.

That is the actual failure mode. The light jet does not fail on range — it fails on payload-range, which is the tradeoff nobody quotes. Eight people, or the nonstop. Not both.

Aspen adds a third filter. The airport sits at 7,820 ft, and Aspen/Pitkin County Airport publishes a hard limit: no aircraft with a tip-to-tip wingspan greater than 95 feet. So the answer for eight people to Aspen in January is a super-midsize with the wingspan to comply — not the light jet the brochure endorsed, and not the heavy jet the budget might have allowed.

Published range is a marketing number — here is what it assumes

Every published range figure is a specific, favorable flight profile, and no two manufacturers use the same one. Read the footnote before you compare two numbers.

Gulfstream states the G650ER’s 7,500 nm at Mach 0.85 with 8 passengers, 4 crew, and NBAA IFR reserves. The same aircraft publishes 6,400 nm at Mach 0.90. Flying 0.05 Mach faster costs 1,100 nm — about 15% of the airplane’s reach, for roughly 25 knots.

Embraer’s Phenom 300EV footnote is stricter in some ways and looser in others: five occupants at 200 lb, long-range cruise, 85% annual winds, and NBAA IFR reserves with a 100 nm alternate. The conventional NBAA IFR reserve profile assumes a 200 nm diversion plus 30 minutes of holding. Two brochure range figures computed on different alternates are not directly comparable, and nothing on either page tells you that.

The practical rule: subtract 10–15% from any published range for real routing, then check payload separately. If the leg still fits, it fits.

Overwater legs need a further check. Los Angeles to Honolulu is about 2,216 nm — comfortably inside a super-midsize’s book range. But there is no 200 nm alternate in the middle of the Pacific, and the Hawaiian alternates are all clustered at the far end. This is the route where “the brochure covers it” most reliably stops being true, and where operators plan fuel that has nothing to do with the published number. Runway and altitude decide more trips than range does

Airport constraints eliminate more aircraft than range does, and they do it before you get a quote. Three variables matter: runway length, field elevation, and published operating restrictions.

Hot and high airports lengthen the takeoff roll for every aircraft. Aspen combines a 7,820 ft elevation with a single runway and the 95 ft wingspan cap, so category selection there is a compliance question first and a comfort question second.

In London, the two business-aviation gateways constrain you in opposite ways. London Biggin Hill publishes a 1,806 m runway (about 5,925 ft) with a landing distance available of 1,670 m on Runway 21, and it closes overnight — 0630 to 2300 on weekdays, shorter on weekends. That runway is fine for most midsize and super-midsize jets and marginal for a fully fueled heavy jet. London Luton has the full-length runway, so there the binding constraints are slots, handling, and cost rather than pavement.

Part 135 versus Part 91: which rules your flight runs under

Charter flights operate under FAA Part 135; privately flown owner trips operate under Part 91. The distinction changes crew rules, maintenance requirements, and who is legally responsible for the flight.

Part 135 covers on-demand and commuter operations for compensation, in aircraft with 30 or fewer passenger seats. The FAA holds Part 135 certificate holders to tighter maintenance and crew standards than Part 91 operators, and the pilot must hold a commercial or ATP certificate.

Part 91 covers operations where nobody pays for carriage — an owner flying their own aircraft, or a corporate flight department moving its own employees. No certificate is required.

Why this matters when you charter: a flight sold to you that is not on a Part 135 certificate is an illegal charter, and the FAA publishes a list of certificated operators so you can check. Hourly figures are 2026 market estimates, not quotes. They move with aircraft age, whether the operator owns the aircraft or brokers it, how far the aircraft has to reposition to reach you, and fuel prices on floating-rate contracts. The cost math that changes how you should read this table

Run the per-occupant arithmetic and the category ladder stops looking like a price ladder. Using the midpoints above on the same Teterboro–Aspen leg:

  • Light jet: $3,300/hr × 4.05 hours = $13,365. With 6 occupants, that is $2,228 each, or $1.49 per occupant-mile over 1,500 nm.
  • Heavy jet: faster, so figure 470 kt true against the same 60 kt headwind — 410 kt groundspeed, 3.66 hours. $8,750/hr × 3.66 = $32,025. With 14 occupants, $2,288 each, or $1.53 per occupant-mile.

A 2.6× difference in hourly rate collapses to a 3% difference per person. That is our own arithmetic on the estimate ranges above, and it holds only when the big cabin is genuinely full.

Invert it and the same math turns brutal. Two passengers on that light jet cost $6,683 each; two on the heavy jet cost $16,013 each — a 2.4× penalty for the identical trip. Empty seats, not hourly rate, are what make heavy jets expensive.

Our position, and it is not the conventional one: for a full cabin, categories are priced closer to fairly than the hourly numbers suggest, and the money you should argue about is positioning legs and empty seats. Most charterers over-buy range and under-buy cabin height. Range you either have or do not — it is binary. Cabin height is what you feel for five straight hours, and a 4 ft 9 in turboprop cabin and a 6 ft 3 in G700 cabin are different experiences of the same hour.

Four mistakes that cost real money

Chartering by brand name. “A Gulfstream” spans the G550 and much smaller airframes. The category and the specific tail number decide your trip, not the badge. Operator reviews are about service; category is about physics.

Trusting brochure range. Covered above: the footnote assumptions differ by manufacturer, and headwinds and passengers both eat margin.

Ignoring cabin height on long legs. A 4 ft 9 in cabin is fine for 90 minutes and punishing for five hours. This is the single most common regret on first charters. Our types of private jets guide goes deeper on cabin dimensions.

Ignoring positioning legs. If the aircraft is not already near your departure airport, you may pay for the ferry flight. This is also why empty leg flights are cheap — you are buying somebody else’s positioning leg.

Where to start reading

Start with the aircraft that matches your typical trip, not your aspirational one. If most of your flying is under 3 hours domestically, read the Phenom 300 and King Air 350 guides.
