What a private jet interior actually contains by category

A private jet interior is defined by three numbers the marketing photos never show: cabin height, cabin width, and cabin length. Those numbers decide whether you can stand up, whether two people can pass in the aisle, and whether the cabin has room for a bed. Everything else — the leather, the wood, the lighting — is finish.

What a private jet interior contains, by category

Cabin contents follow the airframe, not the operator. Below is what each category genuinely offers, using published manufacturer figures rather than charter brochures.

  • Light jets — club seating for six to seven, an enclosed lavatory, cold catering only, and a cabin you cannot fully stand up in.
  • Midsize jets — a six-foot stand-up cabin, club seating plus a divan, an enclosed aft lavatory, and a galley for light hot service.
  • Super-midsize jets — the same stand-up height with more length, a fuller galley, and enough range for transcontinental flights.
  • Heavy and ultra-long-range jets — three to five separate living areas, a full galley, forward and aft lavatories, crew rest, and beds.
  • VIP airliners — bedrooms, dining rooms, conference rooms, and bathrooms with showers, built one-off to order.

One gap in that table is deliberate. Embraer publishes a 4.9-foot cabin height and 324 cubic feet of total cabin volume for the Phenom 300E rather than separate width and length figures, so we have left those cells empty instead of filling them from a third-party database.

Cabin cross-section does not scale with price

Read that table again and something breaks. The Falcon 6X — a large-cabin aircraft with 5,500 nm of range — has a taller and wider cabin than either flagship costing roughly $78 million.

The 6X measures 78 inches tall and 102 inches wide. The Gulfstream G700 measures 75 by 98, and the Bombardier Global 8000 measures 74 by 96. Dassault markets the 6X as the tallest and widest cabin in business aviation, and against aircraft in production, its own numbers back the claim.

Run the arithmetic and the trade is clear. The 6X gives you about 8% more cross-sectional area than a G700. The G700 gives you 41% more cabin length.

That is what flagship money actually buys: length and range, not girth. Cabin width is set by fuselage diameter, which is a design decision made once, decades before your flight, and it does not move with the price tag.

The practical version: if your flying is four hours with six people, a wider cabin beats a longer one. If it is fourteen hours with twelve people, length wins because length is what creates separate rooms.

Cabin altitude and air quality

The part of a private jet interior you feel most is invisible. Cabin pressure and air quality determine how you arrive, and the differences between aircraft are large.

US regulations under 14 CFR 25.841 allow a cabin altitude of up to 8,000 feet at maximum operating altitude. Flagship business jets sit far below that ceiling.

Gulfstream publishes a 2,840-foot cabin altitude for the G700 and G800 while cruising at 41,000 feet. Bombardier publishes 2,691 feet for the Global 8000 at the same altitude, which is the lowest figure in the industry.

Air exchange matters as much as pressure. Gulfstream’s cabins use 100% fresh, plasma-ionized air replenished every two to three minutes — not the recirculated mix airliners use.

On a two-hour hop, none of this registers. On a fourteen-hour leg, a cabin at 2,700 feet instead of 8,000 feet is the difference between arriving ready to work and arriving needing a day.

Natural light and windows

Window count and size are among the few interior features that differ sharply between comparable aircraft. Gulfstream fits 20 panoramic oval windows on the G700 and 16 on the shorter G800.

Dassault takes a different approach on the Falcon 6X: 30 windows plus a skylight over the entryway, the only one in a purpose-built business jet.

More windows are not purely cosmetic. Each cutout is a structural penalty the airframe has to carry, which is why manufacturers treat window count as a genuine design trade rather than a styling choice.

Beds and showers: what is real and what is rare

A real bed is standard at the top of the market. A shower is not.

Bombardier’s Global 8000 Principal Suite includes a full-size bed with an en suite lavatory and an available stand-up shower — the word “available” is the manufacturer’s, and it means an option most operators do not order. Gulfstream lists a shower as an option in the G700 Grand Suite and aft lavatory. Dassault offers an aft shower on the Falcon 8X.

Every one of those is optional. Showers add water tanks, plumbing, drainage, and weight, and weight comes directly out of payload and range on the exact long-range missions where a shower would be used.

Sleeping capacity is the more useful number. Gulfstream publishes sleeping capacity separately from seating: the G700 sleeps up to 13, the G800 up to 10, on the same cabin cross-section. The extra ten feet of G700 cabin is the entire difference.

Below the ultra-long-range class, a “bed” means a divan that converts, or two facing seats made into a berth. That is a meaningfully worse night’s sleep, and it is what almost every heavy-jet charter actually provides.

Light and midsize jet interiors: what you actually get

The Embraer Phenom 300E is the best-selling light jet in the world and its cabin is about 4 ft 11 in tall. Its Oval Lite cross-section provides a stand-up centre aisle, but most adults will move around the cabin bent over.

Baggage is the second constraint nobody plans for. The Phenom 300E carries 66 cubic feet of baggage; the midsize Citation Latitude carries 100 cubic feet and 1,000 pounds. Ski bags and golf clubs are exactly where light jet trips go wrong.

The midsize step is the biggest single upgrade in private aviation. Going from a Phenom 300E to a Citation Latitude adds roughly 13 inches of cabin height, and 13 inches is the difference between crouching and walking.

VIP airliner interiors

At the top, the interior stops being a cabin and becomes architecture. Airbus publishes 270 square metres of floor area for the ACJ350, 243 for the ACJ330neo, and about 96 for the ACJ320neo.

What you can and cannot choose when you charter

This is the practical point most private jet interior articles miss entirely. When you charter, you do not choose an interior — you choose a category, and the broker offers you specific tail numbers.

Two aircraft of the same model can have very different cabins. Interior configuration, seat count, divan layout, whether the shower option was ordered, and how recently the cabin was refurbished all vary by owner.

So ask for four things by tail number before you book: the year of the last interior refurbishment, the seat and berth configuration, the connectivity system fitted, and photographs of that specific aircraft rather than a manufacturer render.

Connectivity is the one to verify hardest, because it changed fast.
